An Edgy Date Night Look

I’ve always been intrigued how some girls can effortlessly pull off the leather moto jacket look. My friend Christina is one of those people. I remember the first time we met over lattes at Wonder, she was wearing the coolest “cool girl” look I’ve ever seen, including said leather moto jacket. Ever since, I’ve tried to incorporate a leather jacket into more of my everyday outfits (see 10×10 Challenge looks) while still keeping true to my own personal in the process (…not veering too far into the biker chick  realm haha).

And while I don’t claim to have the “cool girl” look nailed down, I do think I’ve made some serious progress in incorporating my leather jacket into more looks that still feel like me. So today I thought I’d share one of these look with you, specifically how I put more edginess into my date night looks.

This date night look is nothing too out of the ordinary for me…at least in its basic key elements. But sometimes sharing these outfits with you is a good reminder that our outfits don’t have to be super special to work time and time again.

Here I’m styling a cute fluttery mini skirt with an emerald green tissue turtleneck and black OTK boots. I picked this fun star print skirt last fall and styled it with white sneakers and ballet flats when the weather still allowed for it. But now I love pairing OTK boots with it to keep my legs warm. And guess what?! I love the look just as much! Isn’t it so much fun finding and wearing pieces you can style through so many different seasons?

Some time around mid-January, I start to have a crisis of closet in deciding what colors to keep in my closet. You see, I’m the type of person who loves having a unique color palette for each season. It’s not something I set out to do or anything. It’s more something that just happened naturally over time as I’ve begun to curate my wardrobe by season. Spring is for all the pretty pinks, crisp whites, and pastel blues. Summer is all about bright yellows, reds, and blues. While fall is full of burnt oranges, golden yellows, chestnut browns, warm maroons and emerald greens. And Winter is typically dominated with holiday reds, brilliant blues and classic blacks. But right now is that awkward time in winter right after Christmas and New Years when you feel like it should be spring already but it’s much too cold and snowy out to actually want to wear anything of that season. Can you relate?

Nevertheless, this year I’ve settled on burnt reds, deep maroons, cobalt blues (as seen in my 10×10 Challenge), emerald greens, and blacks to get me through January and February…at least until more sunny days are on the horizon. 😉 (You can see everything I’m craving for spring in The February Edit, in case you missed it.)

Today’s outfit definitely fits into the colors of my season right now (whatever season you may call it!). And I’m loving it! I actually think that’s a part of what enabled me to so seamlessly add on this leather jacket to the outfit and make it work!  In my experience, adding different textures in the same color (black suede boots, black silky skirt, black leather jacket) seems to help when trying out new styles.

And I’m also convinced that pairing an edgier piece like a leather jacket with a sweeter, softer piece like a drapey mini skirt helps to balance the whole look out!

And a word to the wise…be patient if you are looking for a leather jacket. (Mine is faux leather by the way.) There is no need to rush a purchase if you don’t absolutely love something, especially when it comes to such a new-to-you piece such as a leather jacket. For me, I wanted one that felt edgy but didn’t have all the flashy metal zippers and buckles–one that was edgy sophisticated…if that were a thing! Ha! Mine is old from Topshop, but I also have several faux leather jackets from Express that I LOVE and they come in a variety of colors and styles.
